Para-triathlon delayed as Seine water quality deteriorates

Concerns over water quality in the Seine have resurfaced at the Paralympic Games with the Para-triathlon events postponed on Sunday.
Last week, organisers announced a change to the schedule of the Para-triathlon races with all 11 medal events to be held on one day, day four, instead of across two as originally planned.
Paralympics Australia confirmed the first event, the women’s PTWC class, which was scheduled for 4.20pm (AEST) on Sunday would be delayed by 24 hours.

“Following a meeting attended by representatives of World Triathlon, Paris 2024 and relevant French authorities involved in monitoring the conditions of the Seine and the weather, the decision has been made to postpone the Para-triathlon competitions which were due to be held today, 1 September,” Paralympics Australia said in a statement.
Water quality in the Seine was also a major issue at the Olympic Games.
Bacteria levels in the long-polluted Paris waterway fluctuate constantly depending on the weather.
Heavy rains cause wastewater and runoff to flow into the river, causing bacteria levels to rise.

Speaking on Nine’s coverage, retired Paralympian Kate Naess believed the hold-up would not disrupt the Aussie contingent’s preparation.
“I’d imagine it’s not much of a surprise given what happened with the Olympic Games — it’s the same thing,” she said.
“There’s been a lot of to and fro with some of the events being pushed back to today and then tomorrow.
“But they’re a pretty resilient bunch so they’ll just take it in their stride, think about what they can control. They’ll just move and prep, and use this day to their advantage.”
